German-French Austrian Conference in Quantitative Marketing 2010

Dienstag, den 21. September 2010

From Sept. 16-18th 2010 the HIB was represented at the German-French Austrian Conference in Quantitative Marketing 2010. This year, the University of Vienna hosted the Marketing conference with the title “New Directions New Insights”.

After a welcome reception on the 16th of September, Prof. Dr. Adamantios Diamantopoulos opened the conference on September 17th with an interesting presentation on misspecifications in theoretical marketing models.

In total, 98 conference papers were presented by researchers from 21 countries. Paper topics concerned advertising, branding, modelling and sampling issues. In addition sessions dealt with ethics in marketing.

The HIB presented a paper in the consumer behaviour track “From Excitement to Frustration – Affective Reactions to Critical Incidents in Shopping Centres”. Overall it was a very stimulating experience that offered the possibility of intellectual exchange on marketing topics.

A EUROCALL experience

Freitag, den 17. September 2010

This year the HIB was pleased to be represented at the 18th international conference of the European Association of Computer Assisted Language Learning (EUROCALL 2010), “Languages, Cultures and Virtual Communities” which was hosted by the University of Bordeaux, France, from Sept. 8 – 11.

The 7 parallel strands, addressing issues such as “Innovative e-solutions for languages”, “Online multimodal communication and language learning” and Assessment, feedback and guidance in schools and universities”, for example, were well complement by the pre-conference workshops, the 3 keynote speeches, the Special Interest Group symposium sessions and the daily poster/research exhibitions – amounting to over 200 presentations.

The report of a research project carried out among Level 1 English students at the Academy, reviewing strategies for developing reflection on the use of language within an online discussion forum, was presented as a reflective practice paper in the “Pedagogical changes brought about by ICT integration” strand.

One certainly fulfilling element of this conference was the critical approach to analysing the impact of technology generally taken by presenteres.  In terms of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) alternatives for developing learner autonomy, supporting collaborative learning or the issue of assessing a network of students as a unit, a great deal of emphasis was placed on the need for training for both teachers and students, so that the skills match the challenge and learners are able to respond appropriately and truly benefit from the CALL experience. The predominant theme of online communities was extensively explored and of particular interest was the point noted by one keynote speaker of the move from individual competitive learning/research to an appreciation of the notion of collective cognition or collective thinking.
One example of the effect of this collective experience (that is, the function of so-called mirror neurons and the role of empathy in shaping a community of practice – like the virtual communities our language students may be a part of) became a highlight of the conference and is certainly worth sharing:

this, along with the stimulating academic and social engagement among the many international colleagues present.

Besuch der ersten “Green Meetings Germany”

Montag, den 20. Juli 2009

Fachkonferenz Green MeetingsAm 03. und 04. März habe ich in Bonn an der ersten „Green Meetings Germany“ Fachkonferenz teilgenommen, um für meine Business Dissertation „Green meetings and events – to what extent can Congress and Convention Centres in Germany become sustainable?“ zu recherchieren.

Conference update (IV) – “And finally…”

Donnerstag, den 9. April 2009

Now back in Heidelberg safe and sound, I can reflect a bit on my last few days in Cardiff.
Among the 6 presentations which I attended on Friday, the 3 which offered me new ideas to add to the host of those I had already gleaned in the previous days looked at:

Making group work more effective and teaching students how to talk “together” in a more shared fashion,

Taking CPD a step further in making learning at the institutional level more visible and

Examining teachers’ styles of questioning in the classroom and how to improve them so that they support classroom management and facilitate student-centeredness.

In each of these sessions, the presenters shared personal experience, gave practical tips and again, linked theory to practice or to a general understanding of effective teaching methods and materials. On Saturday, I had the privilege of  spending a few minutes listening to Mr. Baldock’s presentation in the symposium on Virtual Tools and Spaces which dealt with how we can continue to encourage students to reflect on their use of language even in an online environment.  This, before heading back to my own symposium on Action Research where I presented a talk on embedding Research and Scholarship into Teaching with the aim of providing an opportunity for reflective practice among teachers and the development of a culture of research within the institution. The final keynote address which captured the attention of what was left of the gathering was brilliant.  Looking at developing the “intercultural speaker”, the presenter helped us again to focus our attention on giving students the chance to further develop a sense of self and their relationship to the social world in a more authentic and enlivening way.  She charged us to create opportunities which allow us to explore students’ presuppositions and challenge their stereotypes.  We received an appropriate supply of practical examples and online resources to take us through, as we move our students from “outside looking in” to “inside looking out” – a metaphor which one can apply in a multitude of ways. All in all, it was an intense and at the same time rewarding experience.  I enjoyed both listening to and contributing my own views in the various sessions I attended.

I certainly look forward to other such enlightening occasions and share Mr. Baldock’s view that the conference offered new ideas/perspectives, gave us a chance to go more deeply into a variety of themes and provided the opportunity for us to participate in an experience and exchange that we normally would not.

To the great contacts I made

Conference Update (III)

Freitag, den 3. April 2009

Following the Professional Development Day on Tuesday, in the last 2 days I have attended (and been awake during ) 17 presentations including two 75-minute keynote addresses.  Speakers dealt with topics ranging from:

the use of Interactive Whiteboards (IWB),

teaching collocations (so-called “language units/chunks”) as opposed to solely teaching discrete lexical or grammatical items),

issues of needs analysis in designing Business English courses,

to reports on projects based on empirical research looking at:

the effectiveness of the use of the European Language Portfolio

classroom-based observation and

teaching with technology.

I also listened to talks by Jeremy Harmer (author of “The Practice of English Language Teaching – one of the very first books I read about English Language Teaching pedagogy), Scott Thornbury (author of “How to Teach Grammar” which some of us in the English department use or have browsed and which is available in the library) and David Crystal (author of “English as a global language” which I use as the main source of background information in my World Englishes Level 3 English class). I must say that I really appreciate the fact that most presenters (the ones I have listened to so far) have been very practice-oriented, attempting to relate theory to practice.

Two areas of focus which stood out for me in these sessions were:

the idea of us shaping conditions for helping students through their struggle to establish a place for themselves in the future (their “imagined”/”aspiring to” future) in the way we “invest” them in the learning experience within the classroom (in the way we empower them) and the view of teaching in multiple ways (to address multiple literacies/intelligences) which helps students take greater ownership of their learning.  In addition to these key issues, motivation also came up as an important theme in language learning with some speakers suggesting that the classroom teacher can promote motivation in the very way he/she creates a stimulating atmosphere in the classroom and most importantly by the way he/she helps students to make the meaning they want to make, where they become real people in real experiences.

Any comments on these issues?  They are full of debatable ideas. What feel do you get of the conference (through my eyes ).Will look out for your comments.Tanyasha Yearwood.
